This book is increasingly harder to find. A very good copy (some staining to edges of page block) with very good dust jacket, the supplement very good with card covers.

Middleton (W.E. K.): The History of the Barometer
S/H. 489 pages, lots of figures, the 1994 reprint of a book first published in 1964. This is an excellent detailed account of the barometer from its invention by Torricelli in the 1640's and all the improvements made up to about 1950. Mercury barometers and barographs are studied in detail, as is the development of aneroid mechanisms. The appendix describes the more important barometers studied by the author in museums and institutions around the world. A very good copy with very good dust jacket. (Ref: K2069 - F6)

O/P. 412 pages, 180 illustrations, 1995. A book predominantly about the Bilbie family who worked in Chew Stoke (Somerset) and Cullompton (Devon), throughout the eighteenth century. The book describes the Bilbie's bell founding as well as clockmaking activities. Many of their clocks are described and illustrated thus showing the chronological progression of dial and case styles. Other clockmakers of the Chew Valley include: The Quarman family of Temple Cloud; The Brock's of Axbridge and the Badman's of Compton Martin. This book has become very hard to find and is always in demand. A good copy, bruised to bottom of spine with 2cm split to cover along hinge line, card covers. (Ref: K1535 - P1)

The listing includes apprentices in the Clockmakers' Company, apprentices in other London companies and, most importantly, provincial names which have never before been published. This is an important book that is an essential research tool. A fine copy.
