NEW. 400 pages, illustrated, 2002. A very comprehensive book, with a wealth of information for horologists and campanologists, about England's smallest county. The book has a gazeteer of all bells, sundials and turret clocks known to be in Rutland and a biographical listing of all Rutland clockmakers plus notes on clockmakers from outside the county who made clocks which are now located in the county. A useful section is devoted to information about British bell founders who supplied bells to Rutland - this information is not easily available elsewhere. A good book which deserves a place on your bookshelf. With dust jacket.

Pattenden (P.): Sundials at an Oxford College
O/P. 100 pages, 5 plates, 9 figs., 1979. A history, description and explanation of the sundials at Corpus Christi College, Oxford based on manuscripts in the College archives. The first dial by Nicolaus Kratzer is now lost but the book describes his other known dials and his period in Oxford. The second dial, usually called the Pelican sundial, was designed by Charles Turnbull and installed in 1579. The dial still exists and was restored to working order in 1976. This interesting book reprints a paper, which originally appeared in a learned journal, detailing the 'Renaissance' sundials in Scotland. The dials date from the 17th and early 18th centuries and are free standing stone sculptures; the list includes examples still in existence as well as those known only from records.
