This book contains the names of the great majority of barometer makers, but only some of the vast number of retailers such as clock and watch makers, opthalmic opticians and chemists who were in business all over the country during the period.

The book's prime purpose is to assist in the dating of barometers from the name of the maker or retailer which is usually engraved on the dial, the register plates or the spirit level. The list includes details of working dates, the maker's business address where known and other activities or achievements of the maker.
