Shaping the Day is a pathbreaking study of the practice of timekeeping in England and Wales between 1300 and 1800. Drawing on many unique historical sources, ranging from personal diaries to housekeeping manuals, the authors illustrate how a particular kind of common sense about time came into being, and how it developed during this period. Many remarkable figures make their appearance, ranging from the well-known, such as Edmund Halley, Samuel Pepys, and John Harrison, to less familiar characters, including sailors, gamblers, and burglars. With dust jacket. (Ref: N1905) More information..... Price: £35.00 |

Light (R.U.): Upjohn - A study in Ancestry O/P. 2 volumes, 286 pages, 76 illus.; and 156 pages, map; 1990. The author, a descendant of Richard Apjohn born circa 1520 has traced and recorded Richard Apjohn's descendants down to the present day. Volume 2 reproduces two early journals, one of them written in 1783 - The life and Travels of James Upjohn who was born in Shaftesbury, worked for his father in Topsham and Exeter and then moved to London. He was a very successful clock and watch maker, travelled in Germany Belgium, Holland and France, and made a few clocks for James Cox. A fine copy with very good slipcase.
