Viner & Co., London c1830 

A small decorative ebony and ormolu bracket clock, with an engraved, engine turned and gilt dial, signed on the backplate Viner & Co,, 233 Regent St.

The 5-pillar movement, with chain driven fusees, has an anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell. A strike silent lever is located on the backplate and the clock has a pull repeat feature.

The ebony veneered case has more than 60 good quality chased and gilded mounts, the tracery panels to the sides and top have a maroon fabric backing. Very decorative clocks such as this example were mainly made for the export market.

Case height 16¾ inches, including finial.

Charles Edward Viner, a well known clockmaker, was born in 1788 and free of the Clockmakers Company in 1813. Viner traded as Viner & Co. from 1824 to 1835 and was located at 233 Regent Street London from 1826 to 1835.
