James Douglass, Chertsey c1775

A small ebonised bell top bracket clock with strike/silent dial in the arch, signed on the polished brass dial centre James Douglass Chertsey.

The bell top case of ebonised fruitwood veneer has four brass finials, a brass carrying handle and stands on small ebonised pad feet.

The case has been re-ebonised and is 19 inches high, including the handle.

The 6 inch wide dial has a date aperture and scroll pattern spandrels; the clock also has its original hands.

James Douglass is recorded as working from 1768 until 1791 when he was bankrupt. A longcase clock by Douglass dating from circa 1780 is illustrated in Antiquarian Horology, volume 11, page 196.
