English cartel timepiece by John Green, London c1765

John Green, St Martins Court, London c1765

A rare English cartel timepiece with gilt wooden case and a silvered dial signed Jno: Green St: Martins Court. London.

The wooden re-gilded case is carved with scrolls, flowers and foliage, all surmounted by a fine carved eagle.

The 5-pillar movement has a verge escapement (replaced) and tapering plates.

Case height 31½ inches (max), width 20 inches (max).

English cartel clocks are rare and always have gilt wooden cases. By contrast, French cartel clocks always have gilt metal cases.

A close-up view of the dial. Note the false pendulum aperture, so typical of these early clocks.

There are pictures of the back and side of the movement on the next page.

John Green is recorded as working at St Martin's Court from about 1750 to 1765 when presumably he died, as Margaret Green continued the business, at the same address, until 1783 when the stock was sold.
