Thomas Lozano, London c1780

This is a fine, elegant looking mahogany 8 day longcase clock. It was made in London for the Spanish market and is signed on a plaque to the 12 inch dial centre Thomas Lozano en Londres.

The clock strikes the hours on a bell, has a seconds dial, a date aperture and a strike/silent feature in the arch.

The mahogany veneered case, of typical London design for the period, has a pagoda top with 3 brass finials. The case has free-standing pillars to the hood with a plain trunk and an applied panel to the base, all standing on a double plinth.

Height 8' 5" including centre finial.

This clock has the useful feature of a strike/silent hand in the arch which some people find useful.

Note the decorative engraving on the recessed seconds dial and the date aperture just above 6 o'clock.

You can see where the dial is signed Thomas Lozano en Londres, indicating that the clock was made in London for export to Spain.

Tomas Lozano was Spanish by birth and is known to have worked in both London and Spain. It is interesting to note that he is recorded as having successfully repaired damaged marine chronometers for the Spanish Navy in 1786.
