A small 2-day marine chronometer by
Brockbank & Atkins c1835

  • A small 2-day marine chronometer signed on the 3¼-inch silvered dial Brockbank & Atkins London No. 1172. The instrument is in its original 3-tier mahogany box complete with its original ratchet winding key. The chronometer has gold hour and minute hands with subsidiary dials for seconds and state of wind .
     
  • The chronometer movement has a spring detent escapement and an Earnshaw pattern balance. The movement is engraved Brockbank & Atkins, London No 1172 and the serial number 1172 is also stamped inside the bowl.  
     
  • The 3-tier mahogany box has brass drop handles to the sides and a bone plaque to the bottom tier. Inside the top lid is a trade label for Brockbank, Atkins & Son, No.6, Cowper’s Court, Cornhill, London. with General Directions for the Use of Chronometers. The box measures 6¼ x 6¼ x 6½ inches high.
The Brockbank family business was started by John and Miles Brockbank circa 1780, and passed to their sons around 1808. George Atkins was accepted into the partnership in about 1815, the firm then trading as Brockbank & Atkins until about 1840 when the name briefly changed to Brockbank, Atkins & Son.
