James & Robert Barker, London c1850A good mahogany 4-glass mantel clock signed on the movement backplate John & Robert Barker 17 Aldgate High Street 1791. The engraved number 1791 on the backplate is a serial number not a date. The mahogany and mahogany veneered case has bevelled glass to the sides and top with flat glass to the front door, with silvered sight ring behind. The ogee moulding on 3 sides of the case, below the glass, is very typical of clocks of this period. Case size 9½ x 6¼ x 12½ high. The Barker family are recorded at 17 Aldgate High Street in 1827 when George Barker, a pawnbroker, took out an insurance policy with Sun Fire Office. Robert Barker is recorded at this address in the 1841 and 1851 censuses; in the latter year he was described as a Master Silversmith and Pawnbroker. James and Robert Barker are not recorded as clockmakers so were probably the retailers of this clock. |

The rear door has a decorative, fabric backed, wooden sound fret. | |

The clock has a 6¼-inch square silvered dial with engraved corners and blued steel hands.
The twin fusee movement, with chain drive, has an anchor escapement and strike the hours on a bell. The clock has a pull repeat feature. |
