English Quarter Striking Carriage Clock c1860

This is a fabulous, large English, 8-day, quarter striking carriage clock with chronometer escapement and ornate gilt case.

The 2¾-inch diameter engraved and silvered dial has a gilt sight ring and fleur-de-lys hands.

Case height 9½ inches including handle.

The superb chased and engraved gilt case has bevelled glass panels to the sides and top with an engraved and gilt door to the rear.

The case has cast & chased columns with engraved panels and cast & chased mounts, all with original gilding in excellent condition. The floral engraving includes engraved birds on the sides and the rear door.

The chain driven, twin fusee movement has a spring detent, chronometer escapement, with engraved platform and compensated bi-metallic balance.

The clock is fitted with maintaining power and strikes the hours and quarter hours on two gongs. There is a strike/silent lever on the backplate.

It is rare to find a clock with such an unusual and high quality case, the chronometer escapement and quarter striking is an additional bonus.

It is very surprising therefore that the clock is without any indication, externally or internally, as to who made it.
