This is a most atractive clock with a mahogany veneered case. It has a shallow arched top, with an opening bezel for access to the dial which has convex glass.

The hood has ebony reeded columns to the front corners with ebony inlay below the dial and circular glazed apertures to the sides.

The trunk has reeded canted corners with brass stopping and a full-length door with arched top. The base has an applied decorative moulding and stands on a shaped plinth. Case height 7’ 2˝"  including finials.

The 5-pillar movement has an anchor escapement and strikes the hours and half hours on a bell, with a strike/silent feature.

The movement front plate is stamped T & R for Thwaites and Reed and the serial number 7779. Thwaites and Reed records of serial numbers still exist and indicate that this clock was made circa 1827.

The Thwaites business was founded by Aynsworth Thwaites in about 1760 and traded as Aynsworth & John Thwaites when father and son were in partnership. John Thwaites traded under his own name from circa 1780 until 1817 when he took his wife’s nephew, George Jeremiah Reed, into partnership. The Thwaites and Reed business continued into the late 20th century.

Here you can see a close up picture of the dial.
