Barraud (P.): A New Book of Single Cyphers, comprising Six Hundred; Invented & Engraved by Php. Barraud

Barraud (P.): A New Book of Single Cyphers, comprising Six Hundred; Invented & Engraved by Php. Barraud
O/P. 3 engraved preliminary plates (of 5) including the title, 100 numbered engraved plates of cyphers, 1st edition, 1782. The title page is a photocopy. The first 3 engraved pages are: title page, dedication page to Queen Charlotte (wife of George III) and an elaborate design based on the cypher CR. The 600 cyphers (six to a page) are for all single and double letter combinations from A to Z and AA to ZZ, the letters I and U not being used. Each cypher (usually called monograms today) is enclosed in a circle, ideal for engraving on the rear of pocket watch cases. The author, Philip Barraud, was the brother of Francis Gabriel Barraud and uncle of Paul Philip Barraud - both watch and clockmakers. I think this copy is missing two elaborate engraved preliminary plates - the cypher GR for George III and a cypher for the name Barraud. A very good copy, the cypher plates clean and bright, nicely bound in half-leather, re-backed retaining the original boards, the new spine with raised bands and gilt lettering.
