This new edition of the standard work on German speaking clockmakers (from Germany, Austria, Switzerland) contains information on 20,000 clock and watch makers. As well as the biographical data many entries include information about the items made and a few include serial numbers and date. Claterbos (F.H. Van W.): Viennese Clockmakers and What They Left Us S/H. 336 pages, 82 figs, 1979. The first 112 pages chart the development of Viennese clocks from 1683 to 1848; the remainder is a very useful and detailed list of Viennese clockmakers not available elsewhere. This excellent book opens with chapters on the seaman's quadrant, the mariner's astrolabe, the cross staff, shadow staffs and reflecting instruments before the sextant. Daniels (G.): “All in Good Time” Reflections of a Watchmaker O/P. 162 pages plus 45 pages of colour and 23 pages of b&w illustrations, revised edition, 2006. This revised edition of George Daniels' autobiography includes more colour photographs than the first edition. Daniels is famous for his invention of the co-axial escapement and for the design and production of a small number of excellent watches for which he made all the parts including the case. [Daniels (G.)]: George Daniels Retrospective Exhibition O/P. 92 pages illustrated, 2006. The catalogue of an exhibition held at Sotheby's, London in July 2006, documenting and illustrating 36 watches made by George Daniels. This is an important reference book as it documents all George Daniels' pocket watches as well as the wristwatches fitted with his coaxial escapement which led to the escapement being adopted by Omega of Switzerland for large scale production. Daniels (G.): Watchmaking O/P. 420 pages, 22 plates, 777 figures, 3rd edition, reprinted 2002. A superb book, by the world's greatest living watchmaker, which explains in detail how to design and make all the parts of a watch. The drawings by David Penney are excellent and make all the techniques described in the text easily understandable. Daniels' aim in writing the book was to inspire and encourage the art of watchmaking - the aim has been achieved as the book has been constantly in demand since it was first published in 1981. Davis (J.) & Lowne (M.): The Double Horizontal Dial and associated instruments NEW. 241 pages, 394 illustrations, 2010. A good, detailed study of the double horizontal sundial devised by William Oughtred. The book reproduces some of the early literature on this type of dial, including Oughtred's original description of 1636, then discusses the development of the instruments and their design. Other sections deal with 17th & 18th century double horizontal dial makers and their dials; and the design and manufacture of modern dials. Written by a Dutchman, this is an important book on electric and quartz watches. Drake (S.): Galileo Galilei Operations of the Geometric and Military Compass O/P. 95 pages, illus., 1978. This is an English translation, with introduction, of Galileo's first publication printed in 1606. Galileo developed the sector (Galileo's "compass") into a useful calculation instrument sufficiently accurate to solve military problems associated with fortification and artillery as well as problems of proportion. Fallet (E.): La Mesure du Temps en Mer et les Horlogers Suisses NEW. 520 pages, illustrated, 1995. A comprehensive study of Swiss marine chronometer makers and their work; some makers such as Nardin and Ditisheim are well known, but this book also includes a lot of less well known makers. The book includes a chapter on the Neuchâtel and Geneva Observatories where chronometers were tested and a list of all the chronometers (with their serial numbers) on trial at Neuchâtel between 1860 and 1984 - very useful for dating extant examples. Gordon (G.F.C.): Clockmaking Past and Present O/P. 232 pages, 35 plates, 29 figs., reprinted 1978. A reprint of the first edition which was published in 1928. An excellent work on clocks, watches and marine chronometers produced by Breguet, with descriptions, photographs and ancilliary information. A detailed history of the famous German firm with detailed information about the pocket watches, wristwatches, clocks and marine chronometers produced since 1845. The business was founded in 1845 by Adolph Lange in Glashütte and, following the reunification of Germany and the revival of the firm, has become a respected maker of first class mechanical wristwatches. Produced as a catalogue of an exhibition held at the Patek Philippe Museum in 2005 this book is a history of the Royal families of Europe in the 19th century and their watches purchased from Patek Philippe. Woodward (P.): My Own Right Time - an Exploration of Clockwork Design S/H. 166 pages, lots of figures, reprinted 2003. An important and scholarly work about how to design and build the ultimate pendulum controlled mechanical clock. The author, a professional mathematician, has built 5 clocks and this book charts his progress towards the ultimate mechanical clock. Several chapters discuss timekeeping errors, analysis of data, various escapements, etc. Other chapters discuss Lord Kelvin's free pendulum clock and the Shortt free pendulum. A fine copy. Woodward (P.): Woodward on Time NEW. 341 pages, illustrated, 2006. A collection of all the horological articles published by Philip Woodward (a respected and distinguished British horologist) over more than 30 years. This is an essential book for clock designers, students of horological theory and all those who want to build very accurate pendulum clocks. The papers are grouped under seven headings: Experimental Clocks; Escapement Theory; Error Analysis; Timekeeping Stability; Pendulums and their Suspensions; A Study of the Spiral Hairspring; and W5 for Emulation. (W5 is a very accurate clock, designed and built by Woodward, with a free pendulum. This book contains good photographs of an emulation of W5, and a more detailed explanation than that given in Woodward's book My Own Right Time.)
