Richard Webster, Cornhill, London c1820

A Regency mahogany and brass inlaid bracket clock signed on the white painted dial Webster, Cornhill London.

The clock strikes the hours on a bell and has strike/silent and pull repeat features.

The mahogany veneered lancet top case has decorative brass inlays to the front surrounded by an ebony moulding, also with brass inlays.

The clock has brass Gothic frets to the sides and stands on ball feet.

The Webster family business was started by William Webster at Exchange Alley in 1711. Richard Webster ran the business from 1807 until 1849 and the business relocated to 43 Cornhill in 1813.

This picture shows the backplate of the clock. Note the fine decorative engraving to the perimeter of the plate and to the pendulum bob.

The 5-pillar movement has an anchor escapement and twin fusees. The clock is stamped on the frontplate Handley & Moore 4450.

Handley & Moore are well known as specialist suppliers of bracket clock movements in the early 19th century. The partnership commenced about 1798 and continued until 1824 when Handley died.

As with all English bracket clocks of this period the clock has a pendulum clamping screw for use in transit (see photo).
